2009 Season Begins July 4th!

Harvest Time opens for 2009 on Saturday, July 4th!  We will have the Country Smoke House filled with lots of Wisconsin meats and cheeses plus jams, jellies, and honey!  The DONUT SHOP will be open, too!  Come early in the day so we don’t run out of your favorite kind of donuts!

Beginning on July 11th, we will have Red-Tart Cherry Picking!  This is on Saturdays and Sundays only and will last only until all are picked.  That could be after just one weekend or we may have enough cherries for a second weekend of picking.

Don’t forget that Harvest Time is open on WEEKENDS (Saturday and Sunday) ONLY in July!

Yes, we have Honeycrisp again this weekend! Also in are Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, more Jonathans, McIntosh, Cortland, and the very last of the Gala apples.
The Donut Shop is open every day, too! Visit the Smoke House for the very best in Wisconsin cheeses, meats, honey, jams and jellies. We are pressing cider this weekend and the brat shop will have brats and hot dogs on Saturday and Sunday.

Jonathan, Honeycrisp, and Cortland

This weekend is the weekend for Jonathan, Honeycrisp and Cortland apples! Jonathan and Cortland will be available during the week of September 21, too although we may run out of Cortland before the week is over. Hoenycrisp are so popular that we can’t predict when we will run out but it looks like we’ll have Honeycrisp through the weekend and possibly on Monday too. All of these apples are still being picked for the store so we should have more for the weekend of September 27th.
And of course, the Smoke House and Donut Shop are open daily. The Cider Barn and Brat Shop are open on the weekends!

Gala, Jonamac in Store Sept 13th

Gala and Jonamac apples will be in store this Saturday (September 13th)! Galas are wonderful, sweet apple - good for pies and sauce, too! Jonamac is a cross between McIntosh and Jonathan. The eating quality combines the rich flavor of McIntosh with some of the spiciness of Jonathan. The texture or crispness tends to be similar to McIntosh but harder. Excellent for cooking, sauce or eating out of hand. When baking, the slices tend to be melting and juicy.

And it looks like we will be getting a few Honeycrisp apples in the store, too.  Honeycrisp are very popular so be sure to come early before we run out!
Also this weekend - the donut shop is open, the Country Smoke House is open, and the Brat Shop will be serving Wisconsin-style brats and hot dogs all weekend. Come out Saturday to see cider made. The cider press will be in operation sometime around the noon hour. It promises to be a great weekend at Harvest Time!

Bushels and Pecks - What does that mean?

If you have been to an orchard, you probably are familiar with the term “bushel” and maybe have heard the term “peck” but what exactly does that mean? Well, bushels and pecks are measures for your fruit instead of pounds. These are volume measures so a bushel is always the same size. And a peck is always the same size. For apples, a bushel weighs about 40 pounds. Here is a list of the volume measures we use and the approximate weight (in apples) for each:
 Bushel — about 40 pounds
 1/2 Bushel — about 20 pounds (kind of obvious)
 Peck — about 10 pounds - a peck is 1/4 bushel
 1/2 Peck — about 5 pounds

Remember these weights are approximate and are for apples only. Peaches weigh more than apples so a bushel of peaches weighs over 40 pounds (about 50 pounds).
I hope this is helpful!
